Someone shared a chat or a file with you, and the link stops at a screen that asks for an email code, a sign-in, or says the link is not for you. This article explains each of those screens, on the web and on the phone, and what to do next.
Every shared link is one of three kinds. The sharer chooses which kind when they make the link (see How do I share a chat?):
- Public: anyone with the link. It opens without a code or a sign-in.
- Workspace: only active members of the workspace that shared it. You need to sign in.
- Specific people: only the email addresses the sharer added. You need to verify your email with a code.
A link for specific people asks for an email address
The screen says This share is for specific people. It is asking you to prove you are one of the people the sharer invited.
- Type the email address the sharer invited you with. Use the address they sent the link to, not a different one you also use.
- Tap or click Send code. Bluedeer emails a six-digit code to that address.
- Type the code in the Verification code box, then tap or click Verify email. On the web, the button stays off until all six digits are entered.
The code expires after about 10 minutes. The screen shows the time it expires. If it has passed, or it does not work, tap or click Use another email, then Send code again to get a new one. You can type the same address again.
Some things to know:
- Bluedeer shows the same message whether or not the address is invited. The screen says "If … is invited, a six-digit code was sent" for any address. If the address was not invited, no email arrives. Check that you typed the address the sharer used.
- The email can take a few minutes and may land in spam. Check there before asking for another code.
- Each code works for five tries. After five wrong entries, or once a code has expired, it stops working. A wrong or expired code shows an error under the box, and the error does not say which of the two it was. Ask for a new code.
- Too many codes stop new ones. Bluedeer sends up to five codes to one address in 10 minutes. After that, the screen still says a code was sent, but no new email arrives until the 10 minutes pass.
- You do not need a Bluedeer account for this step. After a correct code, the shared content opens. Bluedeer remembers the check on that device for up to 30 days, or until the link ends.
- If you are already signed in with the invited address, you get no code step. The link opens straight away.
- Signing in with a different account does not skip the code step. Bluedeer checks the address you type in the code step, so use the invited address there. If you would rather sign in, tap Sign in instead. That takes you to sign-in and then back to the link. The link opens without a code only if the account you sign in with is the invited address.
If you do not have an invited address, or you think you should have access, ask the sharer to check the email address they added to the link.
A link limited to workspace members asks you to sign in
The screen says Sign in to this workspace and This link is limited to active members of the workspace that shared it. Tap or click Sign in, then sign in with the account you use in that workspace. Bluedeer brings you back to the link after you sign in.
If you are signed in and the link still will not open, the account you are using is not an active member of that workspace. On the web and on the phone, the screen title then reads This link is for another workspace, and the only button is Close. To try a different account, sign out (see How do I sign out?), then open the link again and sign in with the account that is a member.
If you are not a member, ask the sharer whether they can send you a link for your email address instead, or invite you to the workspace. Admins set the workspace's sharing rules, which are explained in Set workspace share link rules.
A link says "This share is unavailable"
This message means Bluedeer cannot open the link at all. Common reasons:
- The sharer revoked the link, or it has expired.
- The sharer's workspace has turned off links, or the kind of link this is (public or live).
- The sharer's workspace now lets only owners and admins create links, and the sharer is neither. Links they made stop opening.
- The link is for people outside the workspace, and the workspace only allows its members. If you are signed in with the invited address, you see this message. If you are not signed in, no code arrives for that address, even though the link asks for one.
Nothing you do on your side fixes these. Ask the sharer to send a new link, or to check the link's settings.
A link says "Shared content could not load"
This means Bluedeer could not load the content just now. Tap or click Try again. If it keeps happening, close the page and open the link later. If you have opened many shared links in a short time, the message says "Too many public share requests. Try again shortly." Wait a minute, then try again.
Continue in chat needs a sign-in
A shared chat has a Continue in chat button. It makes a copy of the chat in your workspace, and the original chat and its link do not change. The copy keeps the chat's messages and its files. The files are added to your File manager, in a folder called Continued chats. Tool results and interactive cards are left out.
Opening a shared chat needs a sign-in only for a workspace link, but Continue in chat needs one for every kind of link:
- If you are signed out, tapping the button sends you to sign in. Bluedeer brings you back to the link after you sign in, so you can tap Continue in chat again.
- If you are signed in, the copy is made in the workspace you have selected. If you want the copy in a different workspace, switch workspace in the app or on the web first, then open the link again.
The copy can fail with one of these messages:
- This chat was shared inside its workspace, so it can only be continued there. Switch to that workspace and try again. The sharer shared this chat only with their workspace. Switch to that workspace to copy it.
- You need a seat in this workspace to add chats to it. Choose another workspace. Your account does not have a seat in the selected workspace. Choose another workspace. See What a member without a seat can do and Request a seat in a shared workspace.
- You cannot add chats to this workspace. Choose a workspace you can write in. Pick a workspace where you can make new chats.
- This shared chat is too long to copy. The chat is too large to copy. You can still read it, or get its plain Markdown text by adding
.mdto the end of the link (see How do I share a chat as plain Markdown text?). - This chat could not be copied. Try again. Wait a moment and tap Continue in chat again.
On the web, the button is greyed out when your seat in the selected workspace is locked, and its tooltip says you need a seat in that workspace.
On the phone
If the app is installed, tapping a shared link in a message or email opens it in the Bluedeer app. The screen header reads Shared with you. Above the chat, a small line says either Shared conversation · Live or Shared conversation · Snapshot:
- Live follows the chat. New messages appear when you open the link again.
- Snapshot is fixed to the moment it was shared.
The Continue in chat button sits at the bottom of the screen. It does not appear if the shared chat has no visible messages.
Some replies in a shared chat contain interactive parts, such as a chart or a page. The phone shows charts and simple calculations. For anything else, it shows Open this chat on the web to see everything in this reply. Tap it to open the same link in a browser window.
Files people attached to the chat are not shared, and the phone shows A file was attached here in their place. Files the assistant made, such as pages, charts, images or documents, open in the app. If a shared file's link asks for an email code or a sign-in, the same steps above apply.
Still stuck?
- Check the email address you typed, and check spam for the code.
- For a specific-people link, use the address the sharer invited you with in the code step. Being signed in with another account does not help.
- For a workspace link, sign in with your member account for that workspace.
- Ask the sharer to check the link is still on and that you are on the list for it.
