Why did my task stop after it failed?

A repeating task is switched to Failed after three failed runs in a row, and it will not run again. Here is what the count means and how to get the work going again.

A task runs on its own schedule. When a run goes wrong, Bluedeer counts it. If a repeating task fails three runs in a row, Bluedeer stops it. Its status changes to Failed and its next run is cleared, so it does not run again. A one-time task that fails is also set to Failed, straight away.

What counts as a failed run

A run counts as failed when it ends because something went wrong and the task could not finish its work.

A run that succeeds sets the count back to zero. So a task that fails twice, then succeeds, starts counting again from zero.

A run that stops at one of its limits, such as the limit on tool calls for a run, is not a failure. The run shows as Task limit reached in the Inbox. The task stays active, and the count is left as it was.

See the count on the task

Open the task from Tasks in the sidebar. When the count is above zero, the task page shows a line such as "2 consecutive failed runs". The line goes away once a run succeeds.

To see each run, including the failed ones, open the Results & history tab. The Latest run section on the Overview tab shows what the last run reported.

When a task becomes Failed

  • A repeating task, one that runs on a cron or interval schedule, becomes Failed on its third failed run in a row.
  • A one-time task becomes Failed after its first failed run, because there is no next run to try.

Each failed run also appears in the Inbox under Needs you, labelled Task failed. If the task has Notify on failure turned on, Bluedeer also emails you about the failed run. See Where do task results and notices appear?

What you can do with a Failed task

A Failed task does not start again on its own, and the buttons on its page are limited:

  • Run now is the only action on the task page besides Edit. Running a Failed task this way does not restart it. Bluedeer cancels the new run straight away, because the task is no longer active. The cancelled run is listed in Results & history with the message "The scheduled task was no longer active."
  • Run again on a failed run in the Inbox does the same thing as Run now.
  • Edit saves your changes but does not start the task again.
  • A Failed task has no Cancel task button. It stays in your Tasks list, with its results and history.

To keep the work going, ask Bluedeer in a chat to set the task up again, with the same instructions and the schedule you want. Before you do, fix whatever made the runs fail. If a connector or an action needed your permission, allow it on the task's permission card first. See Let a scheduled task use your connectors
