# How do I give a project its own instructions?

Project instructions tell Bluedeer how to work in one project. Write them in the project's Settings, and they apply to every chat and scheduled task in that project.

Project instructions are guidance for one project, such as the tone to use, the sources to prefer or the terms to use. Bluedeer follows them in every chat and scheduled task in the project.

They work alongside your own [custom instructions](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/chats/custom-instructions.md). Your custom instructions still apply inside a project. If the two disagree about work in the project, Bluedeer follows the project's instructions unless you say otherwise in the chat. Project instructions never replace Bluedeer's own rules.

## Write them on the web

1. Click **Projects** in the sidebar, then open the project.
2. Click **Settings**.
3. Type in the **Project instructions** box, then click **Save**. To leave without saving, click **Cancel**.

## Write them on the phone

1. Open the project from the **PROJECTS** section on Home, or from **See all**.
2. Tap the sliders button at the top right of the project page. Its label is **Project settings**.
3. Type in **Project instructions**, under the **Documentation** heading, then tap **Save**.

## What to write

Describe how Bluedeer should work in this project. For example: "Write for people who are new to the subject. Use our product names exactly as written. Prefer the files in this project over web sources."

Short, specific instructions work best. For longer reference material, add a file named README, DOCUMENTATION or PROJECT (.md, .markdown or .txt) to the project's Files. Chats in the project read it automatically. See [What are the files in a project that every chat reads?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/projects-and-memory/project-files-and-instruction-files.md).

## When they take effect

Changes apply from the next message you send in a chat in the project. Scheduled tasks in the project use the instructions as they are when they run. Earlier replies stay as they were.

## Length

Project instructions can be up to 8,000 characters, including spaces. On the web, the box shows how many you have used, and it stops accepting text at the limit. Shorten the text to save it if you go over.

## Clear them

To remove project instructions, delete all the text in the box and click **Save** (on the phone, tap **Save**). The project then uses only each person's own custom instructions. Clearing does not change the project's chats, files or tasks.

## Who can change them

Only people who can open a project's Settings can change its instructions. The project's creator can always do so. In a project shared with everyone in a team workspace, the team's owner and admins can too. Everyone else does not see the Settings option. For the full rules, see [How do I change or delete a project?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/projects-and-memory/delete-a-project.md).
