# How do I start a new chat?

Start a new chat with the New chat button in the sidebar, then type your message in the box at the bottom of the screen.

These steps are for the web app.

## Start a chat

1. Click **New chat** in the sidebar.
2. Type your message in the box that reads **Message Bluedeer...**.
3. Press **Enter** to send. To start a new line without sending, press **Shift+Enter**. You can also click **Send Message**.

While Bluedeer is answering, the send button changes to **Stop generation**. Click it to stop the answer.

Bluedeer gives a new chat a title based on your first message. You can change the title later. See [How do I rename, pin or delete a chat?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/chats/rename-pin-and-delete-chats.md)

## Before you send

- Choose a [thinking mode](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/chats/thinking-modes.md) at the bottom of the message box.
- Add files, a voice message or an @ mention. See [How do I add files, voice messages or @ mentions to a message?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/chats/add-files-voice-and-mentions.md)
- If you do not want the chat kept in your history, start a [temporary chat](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/chats/temporary-chat.md).
