# Why does Bluedeer say "Too many attempts"?

Bluedeer pauses repeated tries at signing in, at entering two-factor codes and at resetting a password. This explains each message, how long to wait and what to do next.

Bluedeer limits how often you can try to sign in, enter a code or reset a password. The limit stops someone from guessing a password or a code by trying again and again. When you hit one, Bluedeer shows a message such as "Too many attempts" or "Too many login attempts". The limit is temporary and clears on its own. These steps are the same in the web app and the phone app.

## The messages you may see

- **"Too many login attempts. Please try again later."** You have tried to sign in too often. Wait a few minutes, then sign in again.
- **"Too many requests. Try again in N minutes."** You have asked for too many password reset codes. Wait for the number of minutes shown, or a few minutes if none is shown, then try again.
- **"Too many requests. Please try again later."** You have asked for too many new confirmation codes. Wait a little, then ask again.
- **"Too many attempts. Request a new code in a few minutes."** You have tried too many times at the password reset step. The wait can be longer than the message says. See "Password reset codes" below.
- **"Too many attempts. Please request a new code later."** You have tried too many times to confirm your email. Wait, then ask for a new code.

## Signing in

Two limits apply to sign-in:

- **For one account:** Bluedeer allows about five sign-in tries for an email address in five minutes. Every try counts, including a try with the right password.
- **For one network connection:** Bluedeer allows about ten tries a minute from the same internet connection, whichever account is used. A shared office, a home network or a VPN can share a connection with other people, so their tries count too.

After a wrong password, Bluedeer makes you wait before the next try. The wait starts at about a second and doubles with each wrong password, up to a minute. A try made during that wait shows the "Too many login attempts" message, and it still counts toward the five tries. A successful sign-in clears the count.

If you see the sign-in message:

1. Wait a few minutes before you try again. Trying again straight away only uses up more of the limit.
2. Check the email address and password. If you are not sure of the password, use **Forgot password?** on the sign-in form once the wait is over. See [How do I sign in, and what if I forget my password?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/getting-started/sign-in-and-reset-password.md)
3. If other people share your connection, or you are on a VPN, try again later or from a different connection, such as your phone's mobile data.

A [passkey](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/account-and-security/sign-in-with-a-passkey.md) sign-in does not ask for a two-factor code, so the code limit does not affect it.

## Two-factor codes

When [two-factor authentication](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/account-and-security/turn-on-two-factor-authentication.md) is on, the code step stays open for 5 minutes. Bluedeer allows five wrong codes in that step. After the fifth wrong code the step ends, even if the next code you enter is right. Bluedeer then says the code was not accepted or that the step has expired.

To sign in again:

1. Click **Back to sign in** on the web, or tap **Restart sign in** in the phone app.
2. Sign in with your email address and password.
3. Enter the newest code from your authenticator app, or the code from the email if Bluedeer sent one.

Each new sign-in gives you a new code step with five tries. If you have lost access to your authenticator app, see [What if I lose my authenticator app?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/account-and-security/lost-authenticator-app.md)

## Password reset codes

Two limits apply to a password reset:

- **Asking for codes:** Bluedeer allows three reset codes to be requested for one email address in an hour. It also limits how many requests can come from one network connection. Every request counts, even if the email never arrives.
- **Entering codes:** Bluedeer allows five tries at the code for one email address in an hour. Every try counts, right or wrong. The message says "a few minutes", but the wait can last up to an hour from your first try on that email address. A new code does not clear this count.

Before you ask for another code, check your spam folder and wait a few minutes. For the full steps, see [How do I sign in, and what if I forget my password?](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/getting-started/sign-in-and-reset-password.md)

## Confirming your email

Bluedeer allows three new confirmation codes for one email address in half an hour. Each confirmation code also allows five tries in an hour, and every try counts. Asking for a new code starts a new confirmation with a fresh count, but the three-codes limit still applies. If you see "Too many attempts", wait, then ask for a new code.

## If the message keeps coming back

Wait a little longer, then try once more with the right email address and password. If it still does not work, write to us as described in [How to contact support and report a problem](https://support.bluedeer.ai/privacy-and-legal/general/contact-support-and-report-a-problem.md) and say which message you see and when you first saw it.
