# How do I add a passkey and sign in with it?

Add a passkey to your account in Settings, then sign in with your fingerprint, face or device PIN instead of typing your password. Rename or remove passkeys at any time.

A passkey lets you sign in with the same thing you use to unlock your computer or phone: your fingerprint, your face, or your device PIN. There is no password to type, and a passkey only works on Bluedeer, so it can't be tricked into signing in to a fake site.

Your passkey is kept by your device or your password manager (for example iCloud Keychain on Apple devices, or Google Password Manager on Android and Chrome). Many of them copy your passkeys to your other devices that use the same account.

You add a passkey to an account you already have. You can't create a new Bluedeer account with a passkey alone: sign up with your email, Google or Apple first, then add one.

## Add a passkey

On the web app:

1. Open **Settings** from the account menu at the bottom of the sidebar, and choose the **Account** tab.
2. Under **Security & Authentication**, find **Passkeys** and click **Add passkey**.
3. In the **Add a passkey** window, check the **Name**. It starts with your browser and system, such as "Chrome on Mac". Change it to something that tells you where the passkey is, such as "Work laptop" or "My phone".
4. Click **Continue**, then follow what your browser or device asks: usually your fingerprint, your face or your device PIN.

The passkey then appears in the list with its name, when you added it, and when it was last used, or "Not used yet". You can add as many passkeys as you like, for example one on each device.

In the Bluedeer app, open **Settings**, choose **Profile & plan**, then **Passkeys**. Under **Add a passkey on this phone**, type a name and tap **Add passkey**.

## Sign in with a passkey

On the sign-in page, click **Sign in with a passkey** and confirm with your fingerprint, face or device PIN. Your browser may also offer your passkey as soon as you click the email box; choose it there to sign in the same way.

Signing in with a passkey is complete on its own. Even if you have turned on [two-factor authentication](https://support.bluedeer.ai/bluedeer/account-and-security/turn-on-two-factor-authentication.md), Bluedeer does not ask for a 6-digit code afterwards, because the passkey already needs both your device and your fingerprint, face or PIN.

In the Bluedeer app on iPhone and Android, the sign-in screen offers **Sign in with a passkey** in the same way.

## Rename or remove a passkey

On the web app, go to **Settings** > **Account**, and find **Passkeys** under **Security & Authentication**. Each passkey in the list has its own buttons:

- Click **Rename**, change the name in the **Rename passkey** window, then click **Save**.
- Click **Remove**. The row then says "It stops signing you in at once." Click **Remove** again to delete it, or **Keep** to leave it.

In the app, go to **Settings** > **Profile & plan** > **Passkeys**. Tap **Rename** or **Remove** on a passkey. To remove it, confirm in the **Remove this passkey?** message.

A removed passkey stops signing in straight away, on every device. Removing it from Bluedeer does not delete it from your device or password manager. You can delete it there too, in your device's password settings.

A passkey can't be removed if it is the only way left to sign in to your account. Bluedeer then says "This passkey is the only way to sign in to your account, so it can't be removed." Keep another way to sign in first, such as your password, Google or Apple.

## Why does it ask me to confirm it's me?

Adding or removing a passkey changes how your account can be signed in to. If you signed in more than 15 minutes ago, Bluedeer first opens **Confirm it's you**. Confirm with your password, or with a passkey you already have by clicking **Use a passkey**. After that you have 15 minutes to make your changes.

If you signed in with Google or Apple and have no password or passkey to confirm with, the window says to sign out and sign in again. Then come back to Settings within 15 minutes and add the passkey right away.

## If something goes wrong

- **"No passkey was used. The request was cancelled or timed out, or this device has no passkey for Bluedeer."** Nothing changed. Click the button again to try once more. When you add a passkey, the message is "No passkey was made. The request was cancelled or timed out."
- **"This browser can't use passkeys. Sign in another way."** Your browser or device can't use passkeys. Update your browser and your device's system, or use another device. You can always sign in with your password, Google or Apple instead. In Settings, the message is "This browser can't make passkeys. Try another browser or your phone."
- **"This device already has a passkey for your account."** Use a different device to add another passkey, or rename or remove the one that is already there.
- **"This passkey isn't set up for a Bluedeer account. It may have been removed. Sign in another way."** The passkey was removed from your account, so it no longer signs in. Sign in another way. You can delete the old passkey from your device's password settings and add a new one in Bluedeer.
- **"That took too long. Try again."** or **"That passkey couldn't be checked. Try again."** Start again from **Sign in with a passkey**.
